About EURADIA

Our Mission
"As a unique Alliance of NGOs and pharmaceutical companies, EURADIA's mission is to improve the lives of people affected by diabetes both now and in the future, through advocacy of diabetes research in Europe at the highest political and societal levels of influence, and by shaping the allocation of resources for diabetes research in Europe through increased awareness."

Our history
The idea to form EURADIA emerged from a collaboration between several European NGOs working in the field of diabetes (academic science, people with diabetes and health professionals) and a small number of pharmaceutical companies that approached the European Commission in unison to voice their common concern that diabetes had not been included in the Sixth Framework Research Programme (FP6). From this effective collaborative effort in 2003 emerged what was originally called the European Research Area in Diabetes. The collaboration continued to work as an informal grouping to bring together organisations and companies with an interest in diabetes research. The growing success of the group led to the name The Alliance for European Diabetes Research and its formalisation as a legal entity in April 2007 with its registration in Düsseldorf as EURADIA e.V.

EURADIA Partners (members of EURADIA)
Research concerns everyone in the diabetes community; EURADIA therefore encompasses all the stakeholders in diabetes with an interest in research; most importantly people with diabetes, academic scientists who carry out the research, clinicians and specialists who 'translate' research into treatment, education and care for people with diabetes, and pharmaceutical companies who innovate treatments for the disease. EURADIA extends its remit only within the area of diabetes research from the most basic science to clinical research and studies, health policy and care delivery, education and health management. It represents the interests of its members as a whole and not those of individual members. Decisions about activities, or focus of the Alliance are taken democratically by the Board with full representation of all members.

Advocacy for diabetes research and cooperation with European institutions
In collaboration with its Partners, EURADIA takes an active stance in political lobbying at the EU level by participating and organising high profile events with members of the European Commission, the European Parliament, and other diabetes stakeholders. EURADIA also maintains an exhibition stand at medical and scientific conferences. Past activity can be seen on the website under Activities.

Through its actions and in accordance with its mission, EURADIA promotes increased funding for diabetes research in Europe and also strives to improve the coordination of such research. The Alliance is the coordinator of DIAMAP, a major project funded by the European Commission (FP7) that will undertake a detailed survey of the current status of diabetes research in Europe and prepare a road map to chart its future (DIAMAP).

EURADIA itself does not award grants and does not provide any direct assistance for individuals wishing to apply for funding.

EURADIA External Communications
The EURADIA website provides a platform for improved communication and sharing of resources within the European diabetes research community. We highlight information from and about the European Commission and other European funding bodies, including calls for research funding.

EURADIA distributes a quarterly
Newsletter, profiling news events and organisations of relevance to diabetes research. The Newsletter is circulated to our members, to European Parliament committees, to the European Commission as well as to research study groups and other stakeholder organisations both in and outside the immediate field of diabetes.

Regular Position Papers are initiated by EURADIA proactively and in response to events relevant to diabetes research. In addition, members of EURADIA are active themselves in writing and publishing on the subject of research policy within Europe; some of these articles can be found on Links and Documents.

EURADIA staff
EURADIA operates mainly in a virtual environment because its Partners are spread across Europe. The Executive Director is Sarah Hills who works in the UK and the Administrative Manager is Regina Sautter, working in Germany. Both members of the EURADIA staff have extensive experience working within the diabetes research community for many years.
