Our History

The idea to form EURADIA emerged from a collaboration between several European NGOs working in the field of diabetes (academic science, people with diabetes and health professionals) and a small number of pharmaceutical companies that approached the European Commission in unison to voice their common concern that diabetes had not been included in the Sixth Framework Research Programme (FP6). From this effective collaborative effort in 2003 emerged what was originally called the European Research Area in Diabetes. The collaboration continued to work as an informal grouping to bring together organisations and companies with an interest in diabetes research. The growing success of the group led to the name The Alliance for European Diabetes Research and its formalisation as a legal entity in April 2007 with its registration in Düsseldorf as EURADIA e.V.
